Fundația Ceata is organizing in the Bucharest University of Economic Studies (ASE) an event to celebrate the Document Freedom Day. Participation is gratis, does not require registration and is open to everyone (it's not limited to university students and members).
The schedule will consist of talks on the free formats HTML5, WebM, OGG, ODF, SVG and XFC and the Free Software which use them.
This event is supported by lecturer Alexandru Gavriș.
FSUGItalia is arrived the sixth edition of the DFD for this year and wanted to prepare, in collaboration with the High School Francesco Redi of Arezzo, a special day.
During the last few months the staff of FSUGItalia has taught to school students how to make their DFD, working on various aspects of the practical and ethical, free software, and instructing them on how to make an event.
Although the event is organized and managed by FSUGItalia, the protagonists of the day will be just the students and of course, open standards and free software.

From the end of February we have been conducting Freedom and Art Workshops in Berlin. We are using Free Software to make Artwork for DFD. The people who are attending our workshops are mostly beginners or artists who know almost nothing about Free Software or Open Standards. Through the workshops we are raising their awareness about Open Standards and creating promotion material which can be used next year. On March 27, we will present our work and release it.

DFD 2012 @ Kiberpipa in Ljubljana, Slovenija

We will gather on the 3rd of April at 18:00 in Kiberpipa to celebrate the DFD with having talks about:
  • the awesome open format that made the web happen — HTML (more specifically its version 5)
  • open video formats
  • have a conference call (via an open-standard protocol, of course) with Florian Effenberger (head of the Document Foundation)
This year we will give the prize to the urban cultural centre Kino Šiška for making their recordings available in Ogg/Theora.
After that there will be a merry social gathering and debate over snacks and drinks.
So, if you're near Ljubljana on the 3rd of April, you're welcome to drop by Kiberpipa and share the love for document freedom!
At the 31st of March, starting at 8:00, will happen the Document Freedom Day - Puerto La Cruz 2012 at Oriente University, to promote the use of Open Standards on documents, with:

On March 31th, an event will take place in the city of Arezzo, Italy. FSFE will award the City administration of the Tuscan town with the "Italian DFD Prize 2012", to reward the adoption of Open Standards within the administration services and their communications with the citizens. Carlo Piana will give a talk for the occasion. This event will be organised by FSUGItalia in cooperation with FSFE.

At Cairo hackerspace we planned to build a diy book scanner to give it to the Wikipedia Arabic content teams. So we find this a good chance to support the Document Freedom Day too.
We will celebrate DFD 2012 at Cairo Hackerspace by building the diy book scanner and talks explaining document freedom and open source in general. The invitation is open and free for anyone who want to help building the scanner or have other ideas like giving some related talks or workshops.
We will start with talks about OpenDocument, LibreOffice and LaTeX at 2pm. Afterwards we will have a celebration with specially prepared DFD cake. :-)

The annual Document Freedom Day is again celebrated on March 28, 2012. Its target is to point out the importance and the possibilities of free and open formats. That's why we want to set a 'Document Freedom Day Countdown' in this week, where we are going to introduce a new application every day that is well known for its support of open formats and inter-operability.
We have a small salon party celebrating Document Freedom Day 2012, sharing thoughts about the open standard and the current progress of the open document format.
On the occasion of the Document Freedom Day, Konstantin von Notz and Nicole Maisch - both members of the German Parliament - asked a so called "Kleine Anfrage" to the German federal government in promotion of FSFE's PDFreaders campaign: “Werbung für proprietäre Software auf Seiten von Bundesministerien und der öffentlichen Verwaltung”. A "Kleine Anfrage" is a questionnaire, that must be answered and the German federal government now has responded. The questioner are happy for every helping hand to evaluate the given answers. The Grüne parliamentary group in Berlin will award the city of Vienna for using Open Standards in all their publications. Therefore, Dr. Ralph Schneider, Austrian ambassador, will serve as a representative of the Austrian capital.
The event takes place at the embassy of Austria in Berlin, beginning at 10 am. Stefan Gelbhaar, Vice-Chairman of the Grüne parliamentary group in Berlin, will be present, as well as Thomas Birk, member of the Parliaments. After introductive words and talks, together they will hand over a DFD-cake to Mr. Schneider.
The event is open for public, but needs registration beforehand, as it is inside the embassy.
ANSOL celebrates DFD every year, and 2012 is no exception. This year we'll be busy on the date with communicating with the political powers in an effort to make them understand why it is urgent for them to implement the already existing Portuguese laws regarding Open Formats. Op woensdag 28 maart 2012 organiseert Document Freedom Day Nederland in de Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB) in Den Haag, de vierde Nederlandse editie van Document Freedom Day! Dit in navolging van Document Freedom Day 2011, 2010 en 2009. Met presentaties over open dokumentformaten, open standaarden en toepassingen die daarmee overweg kunnen.
Het thema van dit jaar is "Terug naar de Toekomst" De editie van 2012 zal dan ook, in navolging van 2011, worden gekenmerkt door een sterke inbreng vanuit de erfgoedsector. De openheid van informatie en het gebruik van open formaten is in deze sector van het allergrootste belang – in het zicht van brede beschikbaarstelling, openbaarheid van informatie en duurzame toegang.
We will give a 15min talk and presentation at a local University, give brochures to the two libraries of the city and maybe have a small booth at central square which is unclear yet.
FreieSoftwareOG will have an information booth in the local public library, to inform people about Open Standards and Free Software.
Hackerspace.gr will be hosting an event about Document Freedom to raise awareness on the local foss crowd.

In this event, which will be organised by CIES and Binario Etico, in collaboration with the Equazione cooperative, we will propose a public discussion on the importance of Free Software and Open Standards from the ethical, social, environmental and economical angles.
*An appeal to public institution will be presented*. We hope to raise awareness in the Third Sector and among other actors of the Civil Society about the necessity of adopting Free Software and Open Standards in the public administration.
This matter is important for non profit organisations, which encounters problems adopting Free Software and Open Standards in their internal structures, as the public administration asks them to communicate with them by proprietary technologies. Despite the lack of awareness about this problem in the civil society, this problem has deep repercussions in our daily lives, along with other aspects as fair trade, recycling or responsible tourism.

Introduction into the philosophy of Free Software Showcase of Edubuntu GNU/Linux Workshop for LibreOffice 3.5
Lectures and dicussions about open standards and their usefullness. This will take place in the rooms of Chaos Computer Club.
HackLab Catanzaro organizes the DFD 2012 at the *Lab (association's headquarters). The event will be divided into three main topics: Document and Multimedia formats (ODF, OGG) and ePub standard; Licenses (GNU FDL, CC, OFL); Free software office suites (LibreOffice, Abiword).
The event will take place on March 28, 2012, in Belém-PA, the Technology Institute of Para. It is organized by the LibreOffice Community. The event will support educational institutions and public and private companies.

We celebrate DFD by holding a discussion on Open Standards, their importance, and our ability to support them.
Talks and seminaries about Open Standards will be held in the Tecnologico Comfenalco University
1&1, GMX and WEB.DE receive the German Document Freedom Award for the use of Open Standards. The prize is awarded by the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) and the Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure e.V. (FFII). 1&1 is awarded for automatically adding XMPP for all customers of their mail services. The Document Freedom Award is awarded annually on the occasion of Document Freedom Day - the international day for Open Standards. Last years winners include tagesschau.de, Deutschland Radio, and the German Foreign Office.
This is the second of three events organised by Ubuntu-ve.
On the day 27th of March, we will be celebrating the DFD in the city of Caripito, Venezuela. There will be lectures and workshops given for students and teachers from 8:00 am to 12:00 p.m. at the University of Technology Caripito. We have a lab there with 45 computers.

Slovak DFD Prize 2012 in Bratislava, Slovakia

26 March 2012 organized by Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE)
FSFE will award the Slovak Committee for Standardization of Information Systems of Public Administration, to recognize adoption of Open Standards for entire Slovak public administration. Martin Husovec together with local NGOs and academics will present the prize.

Digital Heritage and open document standards in The Hague, Netherlands

On March the 30th, from 1 to 6 p.m. there will be a series of talks with speakers from the world of digital heritage and open (document) standards as well as tours through the Royal Library and the National Archive in The Hague, Netherlands. The theme of the event will be "Open Heritage".
In cooperation with the Dutch Digital heritage Foundation and the Club for History and ICT, the following talks will be given:

In the Paul-Henri Spaak building of the European Parliament (room 4B001), there will be an event on Open Standars to emphasize the opportunities offered by digital technologies to broaden access to culture in Europe and in the world. This will takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. and is organised by MEPs Malika Benarab-Attou, Indrek Tarand and Karima Delli.
The three following speakers are invited:
  • Stefan Gradmann is Professor of Library and Information Science at Humboldt-University in Berlin with a focus on knowledge management and semantics based operations. He is also a leader of Europeana's technical work package on semantic interoperability and one of the main contributors to the Europeana Data Model (EDM). Previously, Stefan was director of the German Academic Publishers Project, and a technical co-ordinator of the EC-funded FIGARO project - both were concerned with Open Access. He was also an international advisor for the ACLS Commission on Cyberinfrastructure for the Humanities and Social Sciences, contributing to the report Our Cultural Commonwealth. The overall focus of his work is an integrated view of the scholarly information lifecycle. He puts emphasis on interoperability and open methods of modeling the scholarly information continuum - both in technical terms and in an e-scholarship perspective.
  • Håkon Wium Lie is Chief Technology Officer of Opera Software. He proposed the concept of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) while working with Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau at CERN in 1994, CSS being one of the fundamental web standards, with profound impact on typography, aesthetics, and accessibility on the web. In 2006, Wium Lie started campaigning for browsers to support downloadable web fonts using common font formats. As of 2009, all major browser vendors except Microsoft have implemented web fonts this way.
  • Kaido Kikkas is a Ph.D, Associate Professor at the Estonian Information Technology College and Associate Professor of Social and Free Software at Tallinn University, in Estonia. He is a researcher and free/open-source software (FOSS) enthusiast (or "academic hacker") and teaches a number of courses on various IT issues (ethical and legal aspects, FOSS development, security etc.).

Michael Stehmann will hold a talk on "Vorzüge freier und offener Standards" (Advantages of free and open standards). Volgende week woensdag 30 maart 2011 organiseert Document Freedom Day Nederland i.s.m. de Verenging voor Geschiedenis en Informatica (VGI) en het Digitaal erfgoed Nederland (DEN) in de Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB) in Den Haag, de derde Nederlandse editie van deze dag. Document Freedom Day is een wereldwijde viering en promotie van open dokument formaten, open standaarden en aanverwante open technieken. Tijdens de lezingen zullen er ook rondleidingen door de Koninklijke Bibliotheek en het Nationaal Archief plaats vinden.
Het thema van dit jaar is "Open Erfgoed" De editie van 2011 zal dan ook worden gekenmerkt door een sterke inbreng vanuit de erfgoedsector. De openheid van informatie en het gebruik van open formaten is in deze sector van het allergrootste belang - in het zicht van brede beschikbaarstelling, openbaarheid van informatie en duurzame toegang.

Document Freedom Day ends but is not over!

29 March:
Today 12:00 UTC marks the end of Document Freedom Day 2012. Thank you all for your motivation and efforts to celebrate Document Freedom Day around the globe without borders! 52 events in 24 countries were registered and together we were able to raise awareness of Open Standards in 19 different languages! All these registered events covered a time-span of 21 hours dedicated to information accessibility - from Japan to Colombia.

Document Freedom Award for Slovak Commission for Standardization

The Free Software Foundation Europe awarded the Slovak Commission for Standardization of the Public Administration Information Systems and its working groups with the Document Freedom Award this week. The Commission was awarded for its long standing commitment and achieved results in the field of the Open Standards. The prize was presented on the occasion of Document Freedom Day, the international day of Open Standards.

Today marks the beginning of Document Freedom Day 2012 at 10.00 UTC, 00.00 UTC +14. The first event takes place in Nagoya, Japan's third largest city, followed by events in Yuli, Taiwan, and Jakarta, Indonesia.

DFD 2012 Events

23 March:
This year's DFD is approaching fast, and we can already say that we will have had a good year: More than 30 events have been registered in South-America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. However, both we and you could do a lot better, and there is still time to register and organise an event. North-America, Africa, Oceania, and Asia desperately need more events. Also, while Central Europe is well covered, Europe's western, eastern, and northern parts could do with additional events. To organise an event, you can gather ideas from the highlighted events below, or take a look at our events page.

Article: Commandment for minimalistic formats - Being an Open Standard is not enough

23 March:
With Document Freedom Day coming up on Wednesday, FSFE is publishing an article by FSFE co-founder Bernhard Reiter. He discusses what makes a good data format, and argues that Open Standards are good, but that we need to push further still. His central question to data formats is "Can we make it simpler?" The article is currently in German, translations are welcome.

Medzinárodné ocenenie slovenskej Komisie pre štandardizáciu ISVS

15 March:
Európske združenie Free Software Foundation Europe, e.V., so sídlom v Berlíne udelí dňa 26.3.2012 o 9:30 na pôde Ministerstva Financií SR, slovenskej Komisii pre štandardizáciu ISVS a jej pracovným skupinám symbolickú cenu - Document Freedom Award, za ich viacročné úsilie ako aj dosiahnuté výsledky v oblasti presadzovania otvorených štandardov. Cena bude odovzdaná pri príležitosti dňa otvorených štandardov ako súčasť celosvetovej akcie Document Freedom Day 2012.

FSFE calls for nominations for the Document Freedom Award

This year for the fourth time, the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) will assign the Document Freedom Award on the 28th of March 2012. With the Document Freedom Award, the FSFE and the FFII like to honor German institutes or enterprises that made an outstanding contribution for the spread and the use of Open Standards. The Document Freedom Award is granted each year during the Document Freedom Day, the international day to celebrate the importance of Open Standards

06 January:

Tagesschau.de awarded for the use of Open Standards

30 March:
Today the ARD internet platform Tagesschau.de will receive an award for the use of Open Standards at the "Document Freedom Day". The prize is awarded by the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) and the Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure e.V. (FFII) for offering the broadcasted shows also in the free video format "Ogg Theora".

Document Freedom Day celebrated around the world

30 March:
Today, activists in 37 cities around the world are raising awareness for Open Standards and open document formats. In workshops, talks and other events, they are explaining why Open Standards and Free Software are crucial to a free and competitive information society.
